Newly Born

And the sun went dim
and their eyes
would never open again

so they smiled and they laughed
danced until the sun came up
plowed the fields and planted seeds
pumped the water and pulled the weeds

they worked and breathed, cursed and sweated
watched the clouds of a distant storm
helped the old man to his bed
and blessed the child newly born
